Student Demographics
This graph was from the NYU-Poly Board of Trustees meeting report in June 2013, showcasing student enrollment in NYU-Poly between 2000 to 2013; along with predicted enrollment for 2014 to 2018. During the fiscal year 2013, there was a count of 2071 undergraduates, 1584 full-time graduates and 997 part-time graduates. This consitutes a total student population of 4652. An important detail is the upward trend after 2008, when NYU and Polytechnic become affiliated, and a predicted continuous increase after 2014, when the two officially merge. For the fiscal year of 2015, there is a predicted population of 4809 students.
This graph was likely brought to the attention of the NYU-Poly Board of Trustees to promote the idea of an official merger as this graph demonstrates the definitive success the affliation had. Since only NYU-Poly Board of Trustees members were allowed to see this data, it likely means that the idea of an official merger was not made available for the public at the time.
The 2015 New York University Tandon School of Engineering: Quick Facts was created a year after the official merger between Polytechnic University and New York University in order to promote the school. These Quick Facts listed several notable facts/data about the school and among them, it mentions: "The NYU Tandon School of Engineering dates to 1854, when the NYU School of Civil Engineering and Architecture as well as the Brooklyn Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute (widely known as Brooklyn Poly) were founded. Their successor institutions merged in January 2014 to create a comprehensive school of education and research in engineering and applied sciences, rooted in a tradition of invention, innovation and entrepreneurship."
Included as a "Quick Fact" is that for Fall 2015 there are 2,286 undergraduates and 2,868 graduate for a total student population of 5,154. This data is higher than the predicted estimate made in the previous graph during 2013. This increase in student enrollment showcases revitialized interest in the school and would help increase the school's budget through student tuition.
NYU Tandon continues this tradition of posting "Quick Facts" about the school every year to promote themselves, although they are now called "Fast Facts". These "Fast Facts" have essentially replaced "Quick Facts" and is viewed on their website. According to these fast facts, the total student enrollment in NYU Tandon for Spring 2022 (the most recent data) is 7,532 with 4,667 graduate students and 2,865 undergraduates. This matches the predicted increase in student enrollment trend predicted in June 2013 by the NYU-Poly board of trustees.
Also included in the Board of Trustees meet minutes from June 2013 was a graph showcasing the gender distribution of student enrollment in NYU-Poly between years of 2001 to 2012. During these years, there is approximately an 80 : 20 split between male and female undergraduate students. There is a small change in percentage of female students, as more woman enroll into NYU-Poly after NYU and Polytechnic become affiliated in 2008. Polytechnic University officially became coed in 1958, although there were women who attended and graduated from Polytechnic during World War II. Yet despite this, women attendance is still low as male students dominate the population.
However, the fact that this was included in the Board of Trustees meeting indicates that there was an interest in the promoting more diversity in terms for gender for the school.
From the "NYU Tandon School of Engineering Report on Enrollment, Retention & Graduation Based on Census Data for Fall 2020" that was found in NYU Tandon's website, supplies a graph of the overall Fall undergraduate enrollment headcount by gender. This graph displays student enrollment from Fall 2015 to Fall 2020. As seen in the graph, there is not only an increase in student enrollment as the years progress, there is also an increase trend on the number of female students who are enrolled. For the academic term of Fall 2020, there was 1,114 female undergraduates out of 2,843 total graduates. This means that in Fall 2020, approximately 39% of undergraduates were women.
This increase can be seen as the result of the school's interest in promoting gender diversity by including the data of gender distribution in the June 2013 NYU-Poly Board of Trustees meeting report.
