George Bugliarello: Visionary Leader and Catalyst for Urban Innovation
George Bugliarello, born in Trieste, Italy, in 1927, was a transformative leader at the Polytechnic Institute of NYU, serving as its president from 1973 to 1994. George Bugliarello, president emeritus and former chancellor of Polytechnic Institute of New York University (NYU-Poly), an acknowledged visionary who brought about significant changes in engineering and education. Educated at the University of Padua and MIT, Bugliarello’s career spanned academia and civic planning. He was pivotal in conceptualizing and realizing the MetroTech Center, a major urban academic-industrial park in Downtown Brooklyn. Inspired by Silicon Valley, his vision was to create a similar hub for technology and innovation in New York. Under his leadership, MetroTech transformed the area by attracting major firms and fostering a synergy between the academic community and industry.
