Title A name given to the resource Richard Thorsen (Interview) Subject The topic of the resource Interview Description An account of the resource “Actually, throughout the sixties funding for engineering schools was good. As a result of the 1957 Sputnik launch by the then USSR, funding for engineering and science was increased and nationally engineering enrollment increased. However, there were local exceptions. In the case of the NYU School of Engineering, which was at the Heights campus, enrollment decreased. This was largely due to the financial difficulties of NYC which, in turn, exacerbated the decline of the neighborhood surrounding the campus. Attracting students to attend a high tuition school in a declining neighborhood was difficult at best. Similar issues of urban decay plagued Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.” “NYU at Washington Square faced different problems. It did not benefit from increased funding for engineering and relied on national recruiting of students, not just students from NYC. The problems of NYC were known nationwide and it appeared that students were reluctant to come to NYC.“ “Eventually (late 70s), the financial difficulties of the City were overcome and many urban renewal projects were initiated. NYC again became a "destination" and NYU has thrived in this new environment.” Creator An entity primarily responsible for making the resource Richard Thorsen Date A point or period of time associated with an event in the lifecycle of the resource 31st March, 2022 Format The file format, physical medium, or dimensions of the resource Interview Language A language of the resource English https://www.polyarchives.hosting.nyu.edu/files/original/f84b4f5331958a9c0698b7515168173c.png 81be8c3ce257c0a99824fee0c1407cb6 https://www.polyarchives.hosting.nyu.edu/files/original/6216f3508ef0f67151cdbb9a3afaae7c.png 305245692e0ac1144a3e7e034d93d9bf https://www.polyarchives.hosting.nyu.edu/files/original/c5e470dbc49a52b10bc1bdf3589709aa.png c0486aef5da758011c1e4af34e6029ae https://www.polyarchives.hosting.nyu.edu/files/original/aa3acbdc7452844957bc039ca3e500a5.png 46eec1c6446be56978930182eae5663e https://www.polyarchives.hosting.nyu.edu/files/original/7ec903584d33a36e7e89c90b49042b76.png 567f8d25c57617e0237a5b339f255e1a https://www.polyarchives.hosting.nyu.edu/files/original/53c8ea5a71da06f59713b39ee07cc6e2.png a75871b1c9541883ac91ca6d4b231fd6 Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. Title A name given to the resource 'Welcome to Fear City' – the inside story of New York's civil war, 40 years on Subject The topic of the resource 'Welcome to Fear City' – the inside story of New York's civil war, 40 years on Description An account of the resource New York’s fiscal crisis of the mid-1970s is surely one of the weirdest moments in the history of the city – indeed, of the United States. It was a time when the wholesale disintegration of the largest city in the most powerful nation on earth seemed entirely possible. By early 1975, New York City owed $5bn to $6bn in short-term debt, out of an operating budget of $11.5bn. According to the then-city budget director, Peter Goldmark Jr, “Many people believe there is little or no real security or receivables behind these obligations.” Wall Street bankers, who had enabled much of this reckless behavior, now abruptly refused to take up any more of the city’s notes, leaving it teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. Title A name given to the resource NYC in Chaos Subject The topic of the resource NYC in Chaos Description An account of the resource New York City in the late 1970s was plagued by severe economic and political troubles unlike any the city's inhabitants had experienced before. Faced with economic stagnation, industrial decline, and the looming threat of bankruptcy, the City of New York responded by laying off city workers and cutting municipal services such as sanitation and after-school programs. The city's already high unemployment rates got higher, and many middle class families — more than 820,000 people — fled to the suburbs in a movement known as white flight, desperate for jobs. Title A name given to the resource Course Catalog (2013-2014) Subject The topic of the resource Course Catalog (2013-2014) Description An account of the resource In 2012, the Board of Trustees of NYU and the Board of Trustees of NYU-Poly voted for the institutions to undertake the final set of steps necessary to complete the merger and make NYU-Poly NYU's School of Engineering. Since that time, key approvals, from state and accrediting authorities have put the merger on track to be finalized as of January 1, 2014, at which point NYUPoly will become the newest school at NYU: the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering. For NYU-Poly, the affiliation and merger bring a connection to a major research university with an extensive basic science research agenda and great strength in the social sciences, humanities, and professions. For NYU, it brings the re-establishment of a capability of applied science, technology, and engineering - a capability it had not had since the closing of the Heights Campus in the early 1970s - and all the energizing benefits those disciplines would bring to its existing areas of scholarship.
