In 1973 Polytechnic absorbed New York University's School of Engineering and Science. At that time, Polytechnic had campuses in Brooklyn and Farmingdale (Long Island), and a graduate center in White Plains.

Polytechnic had an enrollment of nearly 5,000 graduate and undergraduate
students. The engineering enrollment (bachelor's, master's and doctoral) was first in New York State and one of the largest in the nation.

Many of Polytechnic's 225 faculty members are nationally and internationally recognized for their achievements as teachers, scholars and researchers. The Polytechnic faculty conducts over $6 million of research annually.

The two engineering colleges that merged in 1973 to become Polytechnic Institute of New York have roots in New York City going back to the same year. In 1854, the Brooklyn Collegiate and Polytechnic Institute received
its charter from the New York State Board of Regents. That same year New York University established its school of civil engineering and architecture. Both schools began instruction in 1855. And in 1973, the inheritors of these traditions joined forces to form a single institution.</text>

The University has also redirected its education programs, phasing out undergraduate programs at the Long Island campus and consolidating them at MetroTech, while still offering graduate programs to the Long Island engineering and technology community. Undergraduate programs on Long Island were discontinued in June 2002 as the University opened the Long Island Graduate Center in Melville, N.Y.</text>

<text>In 2012, the Board of Trustees of NYU and the Board of Trustees of NYU-Poly voted for the institutions to undertake the final set of steps necessary to complete the merger and make NYU-Poly NYU's School of Engineering. Since that time, key approvals, from state and accrediting authorities have put the merger on track to be finalized as of January 1, 2014, at which point NYUPoly will become the newest school at NYU: the NYU Polytechnic School of Engineering.

For NYU-Poly, the affiliation and merger bring a connection to a major
research university with an extensive basic science research agenda and great
strength in the social sciences, humanities, and professions. For NYU, it brings the re-establishment of a capability of applied science, technology, and engineering - a capability it had not had since the closing of the Heights Campus in the early 1970s - and all the energizing benefits those disciplines would bring to its existing areas of scholarship.

<text>New York’s fiscal crisis of the mid-1970s is surely one of the weirdest moments in the history of the city – indeed, of the United States. It was a time when the wholesale disintegration of the largest city in the most powerful nation on earth seemed entirely possible.
By early 1975, New York City owed $5bn to $6bn in short-term debt, out of an operating budget of $11.5bn. According to the then-city budget director, Peter Goldmark Jr, “Many people believe there is little or no real security or receivables behind these obligations.” Wall Street bankers, who had enabled much of this reckless behavior, now abruptly refused to take up any more of the city’s notes, leaving it teetering on the edge of bankruptcy.</text>

<text>“Actually, throughout the sixties funding for engineering schools was good. As a result of the 1957 Sputnik launch by the then USSR, funding for engineering and science was increased and nationally engineering enrollment increased. However, there were local exceptions. In the case of the NYU School of Engineering, which was at the Heights campus, enrollment decreased. This was largely due to the financial difficulties of NYC which, in turn, exacerbated the decline of the neighborhood surrounding the campus. Attracting students to attend a high tuition school in a declining neighborhood was difficult at best. Similar issues of urban decay plagued Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn.”

“NYU at Washington Square faced different problems. It did not benefit from increased funding for engineering and relied on national recruiting of students, not just students from NYC. The problems of NYC were known nationwide and it appeared that students were reluctant to come to NYC.“

“Eventually (late 70s), the financial difficulties of the City were overcome and many urban renewal projects were initiated. NYC again became a "destination" and NYU has thrived in this new environment.”</text>
