Want to learn how to do a newspaper or magazine layout? Want to see something from your own pen in print? If your answer to any these questions is “yes”, then Poly publications is the place for you. Poly publications is comprised of six separate entities: the Reporter, the Poly newspaper; the Engineer, the undergraduate technical magazine; Polywog, the yearbook; Counterweight Quarterly, the literary magazine; Golana, the science fiction magazine; and Focus, the publications’ photography staff. The Reporter is published every week of academic year, except during holidays and exam periods, with a total of 27 issues. The paper covers all in-Poly and Poly-connected activities, including Spring Carnival, sports, student demonstrations, technical society meetings, etc. as well as other student oriented news, such as recent Columbia University disruption. The staff of the paper is subdivided into several staffs (news, copy, sports, etc.), and each of these staffs needs people willing to work. Drop by room 110 anytime if you are interested. One of the better college engineering magazines in the country is Polys Engineer. Published four times a year (October, December, February, and April, or whenever its done) the Engineer prints technical articles written by students. Although student authored and edited, the Engineer’s articles cover a wide range of topics, from the New York’s subway system to the historical significance of the angle. If you are interested in working in any capacity on the magazine, come to room 106. Polywog, the undergraduate yearbook is different from most yearbooks in that it is not a senior-only book. The staff is made up of students from all classes, as a freshman may have just as much responsibility as a senior. The Poly yearbook is noted for its originality and effective graphic presentation. The center of Poly’s “literary life”, Counterweight Quarterly, in room 104. Published four times a year, (Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer), Counterweight Quarterly prints poetry, fiction, photographs, artwork, and anything else of interest. Badly in need of more fiction, the magazine is anxious for new staff members. Golana, an “undergraduate science fiction magazine, published semi-regularly,” (usually three times a year), is also ensconced in room 104. Golana prints student-authored science fiction stories, book reviews, and artwork. Serving all five publications, Focus, the publications photo staff, is open to any student (experienced or inexperienced) with an interest in photography. Focus has its own very well equipped darkroom (including facilities for color processing and printing) in room 114, and an office in room 102. In exchange for a few hours work a week. To any student interested in getting more out of four years at Poly than eye strain from studying, publications offer an interesting and relaxing diversion, as well as an introduction to what may well turn out to be a career, as it has for Poly graduates. Text Any textual data included in the document Golana Elects Wachsman, Grasso Editors-in-Chief For Coming Year A Golana tradition was continued when the Spring 1967 Issue came out two days ago. Golana, reputed to be the only science fiction magazine in the universe, is in its fifth year, and the latest issue, Number 8, is probably the finest yet. The newly elected managing board, led by Carl T. Grasso and Gilbert L. Wachsman, Editors-in-Chief, expects to make the upcoming fall issue even better, if possible. "God, Golem and Godel," Edward Dong's prize-winning story in the Data Processing Magazine SF Contest, highlights Golana. Ed, the Editor in Chief for the last two years, also contributed a new story, "The Call," a tale of a noble character, in the past or perhaps the future. Robert Mattson, Poly's artist par excellence, has continued his series of centerfold scenes from Tolkien's Middle Earth. In addition to viewing pleasure, the ink drawings provide some challenge for especially rabid Hobbit followers, since Mattson has placed a deliberate error in each. Carl T. Grasso shows off his considerable talent and imagination in a story with a remarkable ending, "The Time Machine Revisited." John Closson has applied his masterful skills in the art of calligraphy to every poem printed in the Spring Issue. Other features include a full-color cover by Jack Gaughan, as well as numerous stories and poems by Poly students. The magazine is technically much improved over earlier efforts. Golana now boasts linotype copy, editorials, and book reviews, more and better stories, and a very professional layout. The staff of Golana has high hopes that Poly's own will carry off a Hugo award for Amateur SF Publication at the next National Science Fiction Convention. Carl T. Grasso, editor in chief, has risen to his high position despite his membership in ROTC and Scabbard & Blade. However, it's been noted that Grasso's staff does seem to stay as far away from his as possible. Gilbert L. Wachsman, also editor in chief, has been on publications since his Freshman year. His experience on the REPORTER, the Engineer, Golana, and in certain less overt ventures should be of great value to the magazine. Allan E. Levy, continuing as managing editor, is proud of the fact that he paid his Undergraduate Student Activities Fee. He also has experience on numerous other publications, but no one holds it against him. John Hoffman, Technical Editor and a relative newcomer to the world of publications, expects to prove to the world what no smoking can do to a person. He will admit, under duress, that he also belongs to the Reporter and the Engineer. Anthony Kurapko served his time on the Engineer as Art Editor, and he will gladly tutor any aspiring Freshman in the art of removing unwanted structures such as the Brooklyn Bridge or Poly. Text Any textual data included in the document Literary Magazine: Counterweight Is Growing Counterweight Quarterly last year scored a spectacular success which saw the literary magazine expand from a slim publication of mediocre quality to a 48-page quarterly. The enthusiasm generated by last year's issues has continued this year. Many new writers and artists have joined the staff of Counterweight Quarterly–not only entering freshmen, but also talent which has been hiding in Poly for several years. Undiscovered authors have been asked to send their manuscripts or drawings to Counterweight Quarterly in room 104 or through Poly mail box number 437. The first issue of Counterweight Quarterly is tentatively scheduled to appear in early November. The deadline for material for the first issue is October 15. The editors hope to present the school with the best issue ever. According to Stephen Fairhurst, editor-in-chief of the publication, "We succeeded beyond our expectations last year. This year we hope to maintain and improve the magazine; we particularly want to increase the amount of art and photography in the issue. Much of this, however, is dependent on the money available; the more generous the Student Council, the better the literary magazine". The editors feel that the new writers who have joined the Counterweight staff will "more than offset the loss (through graduation) of some of our best and most prolific writers". Text Any textual data included in the document EDITORIAL: Apathy Something is different about Poly this year; the spirit is changing. Apathy, at long last, is dying out. New clubs are springing up like weeds after a spring shower and are destroying the old, familiar, apathetic ways as thoroughly as weeds destroy a garden. Suddenly, Polymen seem to be interested in something else besides the three standbys: grades, money, and sex (not necessarily in that order). Last year, the Football Club and the Automotive Club came into being; the Math Team, organized the previous year, engaged in its first competition; the long-extinct Spring Carnival finally returned to the green cement campus of the Polytechnic, after going through a laborious rebirth. This semester, a chapter of the Illuminating Engineering Society has already been formed; a Joint Publications Council has been set up; an attempt is being made to start a social sciences publication; and Golana is applying for full publication status to the Student Council. Even the Council itself has produced a long-overdue new Constitution and Bylaws. Polymen are also opening up entire new areas. Golana is the only science fiction magazine published by undergraduates in the entire country and, as far as is known, in the entire universe; the Poly student chapter of the Illuminating Engineering Society is the first IES student chapter on the East Coast; and the Interscholastic Math League, to which our Math Team belongs, was also started at the impetus of Polymen. Text Any textual data included in the document Freshman Committee To Spur Participation In Student Activities On Tuesday, October 15, during the fourth hour, two dozen freshmen will embark on the first step of the new Freshman Leadership Committee: the organizational meeting. The purpose of the gathering, which will be held in Room 305, is to divide the participating freshmen into work groups and start these committees on their separate projects. Mark Trozzi, Advisor to the Freshmen Committee, when interviewed, stated: "The committee applications have been quite satisfactory and I feel we have a high level sample of Polytechnic freshmen. Their ideas should be a tonic to the 'tired blood' that we currently call Poly's "student spirit." I am also pleased to note the interest of several freshmen coeds in student activities. Nen. As a matter of fact, our next issue of Golana will feature fantasy." Publishing Problems Gilbert Wachsman, Managing Editor of the magazine, explained the kinds of problems that the staff encountered in publishing. "As in most literary magazines the major problem encountered in publishing is finding prose, poetry, and artwork of adequately high quality and in sufficient quantity. In the past this problem has been the cause of the exceedingly short Golanas being published. This year the formation of a very hard-working and talented staff and the excellent contributions of a great many more authors has solved this problem for us. This staff is also responsible for overcoming the many technical difficulties of production." More Money Needed Since Golana, by its very nature, always looks towards the future, Dong was asked what future plans he and his staff had for the magazine. "Well, we need additional capital, for which we'll ask the Council at its rebudgeting session, for a 120-page issue in May. We have nearly 50 pages either in finished copy form or in the definite planning stage. This 120-page issue will have a three-color cover, which we already have, and some 20 pages in color. "This 120-page issue," he went on, "will feature a lead short novel, in the swords-and-Sorcery tradition." Next year, the Science Fiction Club is planning four issues, each 120 pages long and with color. Interested in binary digits–he has written two articles on this subject–he currently lives in a three-story house in Red Bank, New Jersey, with his wife, Carol. Currently, the Science Fiction Club is publishing Golana, a 36-page magazine devoted to social science fiction–i. e., stories concerning the impact of technology upon individuals and upon peoples. The covers for the issue have already been made up; Mr. Brian Wrynn, associate secretary of the Club, said of these covers: "Abstract in theme, symbolize man's quest." On the front cover, there is the launching of a rocket, and, on the back, an abstract of man against the universe." The illustrator was William Schloman. Golana's first issue, according to Edward Dong, the Science Fiction Club's Vice-President, will be out about December, 1963. It is dedicated to E. E. Smith, whose Skylark and Lensmen series are famed in the science fiction field. A transcript of Frederik Pohl's talk to the Club will also be published. Text Any textual data included in the document Feature Guest Speaker At Science Fiction Club: Famed Frederik Pohl Frederik Pohl, famed editor of Galaxy, Science Fiction magazine, will be the featured guest speaker at the Science Fiction Club meeting, Wednesday, November 27, fifth hour. Because of the large number of people expected to come to hear him speak, Room 116 has been engaged for his talk. Mr. Pohl became editor of Galaxy in 1961 when Horace Gold, the founder, retired. He is also editor of Worlds of If and Worlds of Tomorrow. "Mr. Pohl is the first of three speakers to come," said Edward Dong, Vice-President of the Club. No title was given for the speech; this was left to Mr. Pohl. A Prolific Author Mr. Pohl is 43 years old; he has published 43 books. Called "One of the finest satirists of the 20th Century," he first earned his fame, when the book, The Space Merchants, written in collaboration with C. M. Kornbluth, exploded upon the American scene. Other equally good and deservedly famed collaborations have been Search The Sky, The Wonder Effect, Gladiator-at-Law, and Wolfbane. Mr. Pohl has edited the short story anthologies, Beyond Tomorrow and To The End of Time. His short story collections include The Abominable Earthman, Alternating Currents, Turn Left At Thursday, and The Man Who Ate the World. The recently issued Drunkard's Walk is one of his best novels.
