Golana Elects Wachsman, Grasso Editors-in-Chief For Coming Year
A Golana tradition was continued when the Spring 1967 Issue came out two days ago. Golana, reputed to be the only science fiction magazine in the universe, is in its fifth year, and the latest issue, Number 8, is probably the finest yet. The newly elected managing board, led by Carl T. Grasso and Gilbert L. Wachsman, Editors-in-Chief, expects to make the upcoming fall issue even better, if possible.
"God, Golem and Godel," Edward Dong's prize-winning story in the Data Processing Magazine SF Contest, highlights Golana. Ed, the Editor in Chief for the last two years, also contributed a new story, "The Call," a tale of a noble character, in the past or perhaps the future. Robert Mattson, Poly's artist par excellence, has continued his series of centerfold scenes from Tolkien's Middle Earth. In addition to viewing pleasure, the ink drawings provide some challenge for especially rabid Hobbit followers, since Mattson has placed a deliberate error in each.
Carl T. Grasso shows off his considerable talent and imagination in a story with a remarkable ending, "The Time Machine Revisited." John Closson has applied his masterful skills in the art of calligraphy to every poem printed in the Spring Issue. Other features include a full-color cover by Jack Gaughan, as well as numerous stories and poems by Poly students.
The magazine is technically much improved over earlier efforts. Golana now boasts linotype copy, editorials, and book reviews, more and better stories, and a very professional layout. The staff of Golana has high hopes that Poly's own will carry off a Hugo award for Amateur SF Publication at the next National Science Fiction Convention.
Carl T. Grasso, editor in chief, has risen to his high position despite his membership in ROTC and Scabbard & Blade. However, it's been noted that Grasso's staff does seem to stay as far away from his as possible.
Gilbert L. Wachsman, also editor in chief, has been on publications since his Freshman year. His experience on the REPORTER, the Engineer, Golana, and in certain less overt ventures should be of great value to the magazine.
Allan E. Levy, continuing as managing editor, is proud of the fact that he paid his Undergraduate Student Activities Fee. He also has experience on numerous other publications, but no one holds it against him.
John Hoffman, Technical Editor and a relative newcomer to the world of publications, expects to prove to the world what no smoking can do to a person. He will admit, under duress, that he also belongs to the Reporter and the Engineer. Anthony Kurapko served his time on the Engineer as Art Editor, and he will gladly tutor any aspiring Freshman in the art of removing unwanted structures such as the Brooklyn Bridge or Poly.
Any students, particularly Freshmen, desiring to gain experience of all kinds by working in such an environment, are encouraged to come to Room 104 and try to find one of the Editors.
